Notes:
Southern college golf teams were well-represented among the six qualifying positions. University of Alabama golf team member Matt Hughes of Dalton, Ga., was the medalist, shooting 5-under-par 135 at Capital City Club's par-70, 7,147-yard layout. Clemson University golfer Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor, Wash., finished one-stroke back at 136, while Georgia Tech's Taylor Hall of LaGrange, Ga., shot 139 for third position. Recent South Carolina graduate Mark Silvers of Savannah, Ga., tied with University of Georgia incoming freshman and 2007 Georgia Amateur champion Harris English of Thomasville, Ga., for the fourth spot at 141.

 

At 142, Tripp Kuhlke of Augusta, Ga. claimed the sixth and final qualifying spot following a four-hole playoff over 2007 Atlanta Open champion Bob Royak of Alpharetta, Ga. Mark Strickland of Woodstock, Ga., also shot 142 but fell to the second alternate position after failing to show for a playoff.

 

Capital City Club hosted the first of two U.S. Amateur qualifiers in Georgia. The second takes place August 6-7 at The Standard Club in Duluth.


The 107th annual U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., August 20-26. Entries were open to amateur golfers who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4. The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
