A trio of mid-amateurs has advanced to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship from Woodmont Golf and Country Club in Canton. Dalton Melnyk, 27, of Atlanta shot 66-70 for a 6-under-par 136, earning medalist honors by one stroke over William Mitchell, 44, of Roswell (66-71=137), who advanced to the match-play portion of the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. They will be joined at the Championship by 35-year-old Christian Raynor of Kennesaw, who shot 68-70 for 4-under 138.

Raynor earned the final qualifying spot by outlasting reigning Georgia Public Links Champion Mark Sweeney of Loganville in a playoff. Raynor scored par on the first playoff hole, knocking Sweeney into the first alternate position. Woodstock's Jon Putnam needed two playoff holes, scoring par on the second hole, to secure the second alternate position over Wes Latimer of Canton.

Woodmont Golf and Country played as a par 71 at 6,774 yards. The 36-hole qualifier took place over two days, with the field of 99 cut to the low 30 and ties after 18 holes. A total of 35 players at 73 or better advanced to the second round.

The 82nd annual U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship will be held at Catigny Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill., July 9-14. Entries were open to amateur golfers who, since Jan. 1, 2007, have been bona fide public course players and have not held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public, or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course and hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 8.4. The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
