Notes:
Sixteen-year-old Andy Shim of Lawrenceville, Ga., turned in a 1-under-par 139 (70-69) total score at Marietta Country Club to earn medalist honors and an automatic qualifying spot into the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. His 139 36-hole score included eight birdies and seven bogeys.

Also qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship was Greyson Sigg of Augusta, Ga., who is fresh off winning the 2011 Georgia Junior Championship a week ago at Augusta Country Club, finishing at even-par 140. Tying with Siggs for second and also qualifying was Jake Marriott of Springfield, Ill., who posted the low-score of the day with his first-round 68.

A four-person playoff was needed to determine the fourth and fifth automatic qualifying spots and first and second alternate positions. Preston Heyward of Duluth, Ga., Zachary Jaworski of Alpharetta, Ga., Justin Connelly of McDonough, Ga., and Michael Hines of Acworth, Ga., all finished tied for fourth with 1-over-par 141 scores and took part in the playoff. Heyward earned the fourth automatic qualifying spot on the first hole of the playoff, and Hines earned the fifth automatic spot on the third playoff hole. Connelly and Jaworski finished in the first and second alternate positions, respectively.

The field was cut to the low 27 players and ties after the first round, including all players within eight strokes of the 18-hole leader, with the cutline falling at 6-over-par 76 and 48 players advanced to round two.

At 6:33 p.m., severe weather moved into the area and caused second-round play to be suspended for approximately 34 minutes. At 7:07 p.m., players returned to the course and resumed play. Marietta Country Club, one of 62 qualifying sites nationwide, played to 6,793 yards and a par of 70. The 64th annual U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., July 18-23. Entries were open to amateur golfers who will not have reached their 18th birthday on or before July 23, 2011, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 6.4. The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
