Notes:
There was a two-woman playoff between Jennifer Cassidy of Dalton and Patricia Martinson of Carrboro, N.C. to determine the order of the top two alternate spots. The pair played four sudden-death holes, as Martinson got up and down from the bunker to earn the top alternate position after Cassidy encountered trouble in the sand on the fourth playoff hole (No. 9). Martinson had extended the playoff with a bunker save for bogey on the first trip to 9, the second playoff hole. Jen Hanna of Greenville, S.C. and Diane Irvin of Pacific Palisades, Calif., who also shot 77, were not present for the playoff and automatically became the third and fourth alternate position spots based on their order in which they finished the round.

Among the qualifiers were four amateurs, including teenagers Whitney Frykman of Acworth (17), Abigale Schepperle of Hoover, Ala. (18), and Margaret Shirley of Roswell (18), the 2003 Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Champion. Shirley, who was recently co-medalist in the class 5A high school state championship, will be a member of the Auburn golf team next fall where she will join Nicole Hage of Coral Springs, Fla. (18), who also qualified for the sectional.

Other past GSGA champions who advanced to sectional qualifying include current professionals Tonya Gill (1986 Georgia Girls' Champion, 1987 Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Champion) and Courtney Swaim (1997 Georgia Girls' Champion, 2000 Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Champion).

The course was set to 6,325 yards, with a USGA Course and Slope Rating of 77.5/139.Qualifiers advance to the Sectional Qualifying Round, which consists of 36 holes of stroke play at one of nine locations around the country. The 2004 U.S. Women's Open Championship will be held at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass., July 1-4. Entries were open to any female professional and to amateurs with current USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 4.4.
