Notes:
Georgians Ron Hunter of Jasper and Donald Crump of Atlanta tied for medalist honors at 1-under-par 71, while Larry Clark of Kingston, Ga., shot 73. Four players qualified with a 74, including John Felker of Signal Mountain, Tenn., Bill Moor of Birmingham, Ala., Robert Pappa of Roswell, Ga., and 1999 USGA Senior Amateur Champion Bill Ploeger of Columbus, Ga.
Five players tied at 3-over 75, so a playoff was held for the eighth and final qualifying spot and two alternate positions. Curt Knorr of Dunwoody, Ga., scored an eagle on the first playoff hole (No. 10) to earn a spot in the Championship. Jim Van Ooteghem of Seneca, S.C., claimed the first alternate position with a birdie on the same hole. The three remaining players – Ronnie Law of Chattanooga, Tenn., Thomas Powers of Smyrna, Ga. and Dick Van Leuvan of Roswell, Ga. – then elected to flip a coin for the second alternate spot, with Powers winning the flip.
Barnsley Gardens (6,862 yards, par 72) hosted a USGA Senior Amateur qualifier for the third-straight year.
The 54th USGA Senior Amateur Championship will be held at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, September 20-25, 2008. Entries were open to amateurs who have reached their 55th birthday on or before September 20, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 7.4. The USGA Senior Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
