Touring professional Ryan Nelson of Dickinson, Texas, fired a pair of 66s and 19-year-old Middle Tennessee State sophomore Brett Patterson of McMinnville, Tenn., carded 70-62 to tie for medalist honors at 12-under 132 and earn spots into the U.S. Open Championship. Both have qualified for the Open for the first time. There was a playoff for the final qualifying spot between PGA TOUR pro Jason Dufner of Auburn, Ala., and recent University of Georgia graduate and two-time Georgia Amateur champion Russell Henley of Macon, Ga., who tied at 133. The playoff went four holes, with Henley winning with a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole.
Georgia Tech golfer Oliver Schniederjans, 17, of Powder Springs, Ga., and Nationwide Tour pro Jay McLuen of Forsyth, Ga., were forced to play off for the second alternate position after both came in at 134. McLuen conceded on the second hole after hitting it into a hazard and Schniederjans was on the green in two.
Hawks Ridge Golf Club played to 7,186 yards and a par 72.
