Notes:
A pair of professionals, Kevin Roman of Roswell, Ga., and Dave Schultz of Fargo, N.D., each shot 3-under-par 67 to share medalist honors. The next four qualifying positions were picked up by University of Georgia golfer Harris English of Thomasville, Ga., who won the 2007 Georgia Amateur; Tom Shaw of Franklin, Tenn., who is the head men's golf coach at Vanderbilt University; professional Emmett Turner of Augusta, Ga.; and Rob Butler of Atlanta, Ga., who recently won the Georgia Four-Ball Championship.
There was a seven-man playoff among those who scored 69 for the final three qualifying spots and the two alternate positions. On the first playoff hole, Vanderbilt golfer Trey Delgreco of Birmingham, Ala., and Seth Reeves of Duluth, Ga., who will join the Georgia Tech golf team this fall, both recorded birdies to secure two of the qualifying positions. USC Aiken golfer Roberto Diaz of Veracruz, Mexico, pocketed a birdie on the third playoff hole to win the final qualifying spot, while Zoran Zorkic of Humble, Texas, parred the same hole for the first alternate spot. Kennesaw State University golfer Matt Nagy of Buena Vista, Ga., and Tyler Leon of Dallas, Texas, went seven holes before Nagy claimed the second alternate position with a par.
Marietta Country Club played to 6,793 yards and a par 70.
A second local qualifier will be held at The River Club in Suwanee on Tuesday, May 19. Sectional qualifying will consist of 36 holes of stoke play to be conducted at two international sites on May 25 and 13 locations around the country on June 8, including Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground.
The 109th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Bethpage State Park's Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., June 18-21.
