Notes:
Three players tied for medalist honors at 5-under-par 65 - Scott Brown of North Augusta, S.C., Javier Sanchez of McDonough, Ga. and Dave Schreyer of Peachtree City, Ga. Sanchez and Schreyer are tour professionals, while Brown wrapped up his collegiate career just last weekend, leading USC Aiken to its third-consecutive NCAA Division II Championship and winning the Jack Nicklaus Award as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.


Four players also earned qualifying spots by shooting 4-under 66, including Don Carpenter III of Athens, Ga., Nick Cassini of Atlanta, Ga., Reid Edstrom of Auburn, Ala. and amateur Mark Harrell of Hazlehurst, Ga.


There was a six-man playoff among those who scored 67 for the final qualifying spot and first and second alternate positions. Chris Kirk of Woodstock, Ga. and Brett Harris of Atlanta went four playoff holes before Kirk parred No. 17 to earn the last qualifying spot. Harris bogeyed to become the first alternate.


Josh Bunch of Murrayville, Ga., earned the second alternate spot over Taylor Hall of LaGrange, Ga., with a birdie on No. 11, the second playoff hole.


Planterra Ridge played to 6,746 yards and a par 72.


This was the second of two local qualifiers in Georgia. The first took place Tuesday, May 16 at The River Club in Suwanee, with seven players advancing. Sectional qualifying (36 holes) takes place at 14 locations across the country May 29, June 5 and June 6. Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell will host a qualifier on Tuesday, June 6, the only sectional in Georgia.


The 106th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., June 15-18. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
