Derek Brown of Walnut Cove, N.C. earned medalist honors with a nine-under 131 (65-66). Other qualifiersinclude Jason Gore of Valenica, Calif. (133), Casey Wittenberg of Cleveland, Ohio (133), Aaron Barber ofMaple Grove, Minn. (134), Scott Parel of Augusta, Ga. (134) and Matt Kuchar of Atlanta, Ga.


Kuchar won a three-way, two-hole playoff to earn the sixth and final qualifying spot over Mike Springer of Fresno,Calif. and Pat Bates of Boca Raton, Fla. Bates missed a four-foot putt to bogey No. 10, the first playoff hole, andbecome the second alternate. On the second playoff hole, the par-4 10th, Kuchar parred to capture the final qualifyingposition when Springer bogeyed.


David Clodfelter of Delray Beach, Fla. earned the fourth alternate position over James Oh of Lakewood, Calif. with abogey on the first playoff hole, the par-4 10th.


Play was suspended during the second round on Monday, June 6 after inclement weather infiltrated the area.Competition resumed at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.


A total of 77 players were entered in this sectional, playing for six qualifying spots and four alternate positions.East Lake played to 7,088 yards and a par of 70.


The 2005 U.S. Open Championship will be held at Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., June 16-19.Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S.Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
