Scott Weatherly of Fort Payne, Ala., competing in his first U.S. Open Sectional, tied the low round of the day with a five-under 67 to lead the field after the morning round. Weatherly, a 2000 graduate of Auburn University, currently plays on the Gateway Tour out of Myrtle Beach. His morning round included seven birdies and two bogeys. He birdied three of his last six holes in the afternoon round to close with a two-under 70, seven under par for the day.
Thomas Levet of London, who also qualified for the 2002 U.S. Open by way of a second place Sectional finish at Settindown Creek, tied Weatherly at seven-under after carding a 67 in the afternoon round. Levet finished runner-up to Ernie Els at the 2002 British Open after a five-hole playoff. He will be playing Shinnecock Hills for the first time.
Brett Lange of Atlanta, Ga., a member at Settindown Creek, finished as the low amateur and will be the first alternate with a six-under 138. Lange, the youngest player in the field, shot a 68 in the afternoon, one stroke shy of his low round at Settindown Creek. Lange, 18, will head to Vanderbilt this coming fall.
Settindown Creek played to 7,119 yards with a par of 72.
The 2004 U.S. Open Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., June 17-20. Entries were open to any male professional and to amateurs with current USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
