Coble earns victory in first GSGA senior ladies competition played

BIG CANOE, Ga. - Laura Coble of Augusta wins the GSGA Senior Women's Championship at even-par 144 (71-73), four strokes ahead of Brenda Pictor of Marietta, who finished at 4-over-par 148 (72-76) for runner-up honors. The 17th annual competition was played at Big Canoe Golf Club, August 25-26.

Coble's 1-under-par 71 in the opening round was the only score posted in red numbers throughout the 36-hole championship, as she finished with an even-par total. This was the first senior women's competition Coble has competed in since turning 50 and becoming eligible earlier this year on the GSGA circuit. Pictor's runner-up finish also marks the first time she hasn't left the Senior Women's Championship with the trophy since 2008 when Darlene Werhnyak of Lawrenceville won.

With Coble winning, she becomes the eighth different player to win the GSGA Senior Women's Championship in the 17 years it has been played. Coble, a Georgia Golf Hall of Famer, has been named the GSGA Women's Player of the Year 14 times - 10 consecutive times from 1998 to 2007, and four consecutive times from 2009 to 2012. She is also a three-time Tommy Barnes Award winner, which signifies GSGA's overall player of the year.

Joining Coble and Pictor in the final top 10 of the Championship A and Championship B flights (which were eligible for the overall title), included Mary Helen McElreath of Augusta in third at 17-over-par 161 (80-81); Tracy Marshall of Canton in fourth at 19-over-par 163 (80-83); Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island (84-80), Susan Rheney of Greenesboro (79-85) and Cynthia Norten of Dunwoody (79-85) in a tie for fifth at 20-over-par 164; Jodie Shepard of Newnan in eighth at 22-over-par 166 (83-83); and Ellen MacArthur of Cumming (85-82) and Maria Johnson of Jesup (81-86) in a tie for ninth at 23-over-par 167.

Coble won the Championship A flight, while McElreath won the Championship B flight. Lea Wilson of Atlanta (83-80) and Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta (78-85) tied atop the first flight at 19-over-par 163. In flight two, Yvonne Bailey of Lithonia won at 20-over-par 164 (84-80). Mary Ellen Radics claimed flight three honors at 35-over-par 179 (87-92). Gloria Parmentier of Leslie won the fourth flight at 39-over-par 183 (88-95). Phyllis Cox of Cedartown posted a 38-over-par 182 (85-97) to claim the title of flight five. Two players tied for the top spot in the sixth flight at 48-over-par 192, including Darla Stahl of Kathleen (93-99) and Claudia Hamilton of Big Canoe (91-101).

Big Canoe Golf Club played to 5,838 yards and a par 72 for the Championship A and B flights, which were eligible for the overall title. Flights one through six played to 5,223 yards and a par 72.

The GSGA Senior Women's Championship is conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association. Entries were open to female amateur golfers at least 50 years old as of August 25, 2014, who belong to a GSGA Member Club.
