Georgia Finishes Second at Women's Southeastern Challenge Match

 

EATONTON, Ga. - Florida scored 17 ½ points in the final-round of three-ball matches to take the lead and win the Women's Southeastern Challenge Match with 29 total points to Georgia's 20 ½, and Alabama's 13 ½. The second biennial event took place at Reynolds Plantation-Great Waters, August 11-12.

 

Team Georgia scored 12 points in the final round from Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island over Alabama (1 up), Susan Rheney of Greensboro over Alabama (AS) and Florida (2 up), Deb Jackson of Johns Creek over Alabama (AS), Brenda Pictor of Marietta over Alabama (3 and 1) and Florida (2 up), Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell over Alabama (4 and 3), Jessica Welch of Lavonia over Alabama (3 and 2) and Florida (3 and 2), Kaew Preamchuen of Kennesaw over Alabama (AS), Sydney Needham of Villa Rica over Alabama (3 and 2) and Florida (1 up) and Janet Mao of Johns Creek over Alabama (4 and 3) and Florida (AS).

 

The Georgians started the second edition of the Women's Southeastern Challenge Match strong by winning four of their six matches in round one to earn four points. The Peach State squad then secured 2 ½ points in round two.

 

Georgia's four points from the opening round of four-ball matches came from the duos of Deb Jackson of Johns Creek and Brenda Pictor of Marietta (4 and 3), Mercedes Huarte of Suwanee and Kaew Preamchuen of Kennesaw (5 and 4), Janet Mao of Johns Creek and Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell (5 and 4), and Sydney Needham of Villa Rica and Jessica Welch of Lavonia (4 and 3).

 

In the foursome matches of round two, the teams of Susan Rheney of Greensboro and Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island (5 and 4), Huarte and Mitsunaga (3 and 2), Needham and Welch (2 up), and Huarte and Preamchuen (AS) earned points for the host team over Alabama. Only one pair from the Peach State, Needham and Welch (3 and 2) earned points versus Florida.
