Notes:
Professionals Dominic Bozzelli of Pittsford, N.Y., and Maurice Jeffries of Peachtree City, Ga., each posted a 6-under-par 64 to earn co-medalist honors at the 18-hole local qualifier for the U.S. Open. Bozzelli and Jeffries now advance to the 36-hole sectional qualifier.
Georgia pros Richard Todd of St. Simons Island (65), Wade Binfield of Fayetteville (66) and Kyle Scott of Tallapoosa (66) also earned spots into a sectional qualifier by finishing in the top seven at Marietta Country Club. University of Georgia player Mookie DeMoss of Athens, Ga., posted a 4-under-par 66 to also advance.
Eight players finished the 18-hole local qualifier at 3-under-par 67, so a playoff was needed to determine the final spot into a sectional qualifier and the first and second alternate position. As the eight players were set to begin the playoff, the sirens went off indicating severe weather in the area. After a 34-minute delay the playoff began. With birdies on the first playoff hole (#1), the reigning Georgia Mid-Amateur champion Cameron Hooper of Atlanta, professional Andres Echavarria of Colombia and amateur Bo Andrews of Raleigh, N.C., moved on to the second playoff hole (#18). With pars on 18, the three players returned to number one still tied. Hooper bogeyed the third playoff hole (#1) and finished in the second alternate position. Echavarria and Andrews then went back to 18 and after four playoff holes, the Colombian professional made birdie to clinch the final spot into a sectional qualifier. Andrews finished as first alternate.
Marietta Country Club played to 6,793 yards and a par 70.
A second 18-hole local qualifier in Georgia will take place tomorrow, May 13, at The Legends at Chateau Elan in Braselton. Sectional qualifying will consist of 36 holes of stroke play conducted at two international sites on May 26 (Japan and England) and 12 United States' sites on June 2, including Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell. Sectional qualifying will consist of 36 holes of stroke play conducted at two international sites on May 27 (Japan and England) and 11 United States' sites on June 3, including Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground. Qualifiers from Marietta Country Club may, but will not necessarily be, at that sectional qualifier.
The 114th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Village of Pinehurst, N.C., June 12-15. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
