Notes:
Six Georgians finished in the top seven at a U.S. Open Local Qualifier at The Legends at Chateau Elan and now advance to the sectional round. Former Georgia Tech golfer and now professional James White of Acworth earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67 to lead all players. Three Georgia professionals posted a 2-under-par 70, including Adam Mitchell of Atlanta, Scott Dunlap of Duluth and Michael Hebert of Atlanta.

Four players tied at 1-under-par 71, so a playoff was needed to determine the final three qualifying spots and the first alternate position. Professional Gary Hines of Alexander City, Ala., amateur Gus Wagoner of Duluth, Ga., amateur Ben Wolcott of Burns, Tenn., and professional Richard Stark of Canton, Ga., returned to the 18th tee.

After the first playoff hole, Wagoner made par, Stark bogeyed, Wolcott double-bogeyed and Hines double-bogeyed, so Wagoner and Stark earned qualifying spots. Wolcott and Hines moved on to the 15th tee to decide the final qualifying spot and first alternate. Both players made par on 15, so they returned to the 16th tee. On the par 4, 298-yard 16th hole, Wolcott birdied to clinch the final qualifying spot and Hines bogeyed to finish as first alternate.

An additional four players needed a playoff to decide who gets the second alternate spot. Amateur Taylor Lewis of Chattanooga, Tenn., amateur Bryan Fox of Roswell, Ga., amateur Spencer Ralston of Gainesville, Ga., and professional Tom Rasmussen of Roswell, Ga., each turned in even-par 72 scores, so they returned to the first tee. Lewis and Fox remained tied, so the twosome played the ninth hole. Still tied, Lewis and Fox played hole one, then hole nine, and ultimately Fox finished as second alternate.

The Legends at Chateau Elan played to 6,986 yards and a par 72. The first local qualifier in Georgia took place Monday, May 12, at Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw. Sectional qualifying will consist of 36 holes of stroke play conducted at two international sites on May 26 (Japan and England) and 12 United States' sites on June 2, including Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell. Sectional qualifying will consist of 36 holes of stroke play conducted at two international sites on May 27 (Japan and England) and 11 United States' sites on June 3, including Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground. Qualifiers from both Marietta Country Club and The Legends at Chateau Elan may, but will not necessarily be, at that sectional qualifier.

The 114th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Village of Pinehurst, N.C., June 12-15. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
