Henrik Norlander of Augusta, Ga., earned medalist honors and a spot in the U.S. Open Championship at a 36-hole sectional qualifier at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek. The second automatic spot into the Championship went to Smylie Kaufman of Vestavia, Ala. Norlander, who played golf and was a three-time All-American at Augusta State University, posted a 4-under-par 140 (70-70). Kaufman recently graduated from Louisiana State University where he competed on the golf team, and he turned in a 2-under-par 142 (67-75) 36-hole score.
The first alternate is Trevor Cone of Concord, N.C., a member of Virginia Tech University's golf team, after finishing at 1-under-par 143 (72-71). Michael Hebert of Auburn, Ala., who played at Auburn, finished as second alternate at even-par 144 (74-70).
Ansley Golf Club at Settindown Creek played to 7,129 yards and a par 71.
Sectional qualifying consisted of 36 holes of stoke play conducted at 12 sites worldwide. Two qualifiers took place on May 26 in England and Japan. Ten U.S. sites were conducted qualifiers on June 2, dubbed "Golf's Longest Day." Two local qualifiers were held in Georgia at Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw on May 12, and at The Legends at Chateau Elan in Braselton on May 13.
The 114th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club (No. 2), June 12-15. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
