Notes:
James Mason of Dillard, Ga., earns medalist honors and advances to the U.S. Senior Open after posting a 5-under-par 67 in an 18-hole sectional qualifier at Brookstone Golf and Country Club in Acworth, Ga. Also qualifying into the Championship include Sonny Skinner of Sylvester, Ga., (4-under-par 68) and Tim Parum of San Diego, Calif., (2-under-par 70).
Three Georgia amateurs finished tied at 1-under-par 71, so a playoff was needed to determine the two alternate positions. Jack Larkin of Atlanta, Bob Royak of Alpharetta and Billy Mitchell of Roswell returned to the first tee to begin the playoff. Four extra holes later, Mitchell made his putt for par on number two to clinch the first alternate spot. Larkin then secured the second alternate position.
Brookstone Golf and Country Club played to 6,802 yards and a par 72.
