Georgians claimed five of the six qualifying spots into the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at an 18-hole qualifier held at Cartersville Country Club on Monday. Sabrina Long of Alpharetta earned medalist honors with her 3-under-par 69. Bailey Tardy of Norcross, winner of the 2013 Georgia Girls' Championship, finished second at even-par 72, and Annie Swords of Newnan finished third at 1-over-par 73.
The next five players each posted a 2-over-par 74, including Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary, Fla., Christina Yang of Suwanee, Ga., Amanda Doherty of Atlanta, Ga., Christine McDonnell of Suwanee, Ga., and Annie Collom of Davidson, N.C. A two-hole playoff was held on one and 18, respectively. When it was all said and done, Carlson, Yang and Doherty clinched the final three qualifying spots into the national championship. McDonnell finished as first alternate, and Collom the second.
Cartersville Country Club played to 6,306 yards and a par 72.
The 66th annual U.S. Girls' Junior Championship will be held at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz., July 21-26. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who will not have reached their 18th birthday on or before July 21, 2014, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4. The U.S. Girls' Junior is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
