Notes:
After a 36-hole sectional for the U.S. Amateur Championship, five Georgians qualified, led by Chris Waters of Atlanta who posted a 10-under-par 132 (65-67). Joining Waters is Joe Lewis of Savannah at 8-under-par 134 (66-68), Zachary Healy of Peachtree Corners at 7-under-par 135 (67-68), Zack Jaworski of Alpharetta at 6-under-par 136 (68-68) and David Kleckner of Cumming at 6-under-par 136 (68-68). These five players have the luxury of staying in their home state as the U.S. Amateur Championship will be played at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek. This marks the second U.S. Amateur Waters has qualified for.
Three Georgians finished at 4-under-par 138, including Bob Royak of Alpharetta (70-68), Trevor Smith of Newnan (69-69) and Davis Parker of Augusta (69-69). These three players returned to the 10th tee for a playoff to determine the first and second alternate positions. After the first playoff hole, Smith and Parker both made par while Royak bogeyed. Smith and Parker then moved on to the second playoff hole (No. 11). Parker and Smith both made par, so the twosome then moved to the third playoff hole (No. 12). Parker made par to clinch the first alternate position, and Smith made bogey to finish as second alternate.
Piedmont Driving Club was set to 7,024 yards and a par of 71. A field of 130 players competed in the qualifier, with 65 players advancing at 5-over-par 76 to the final round after the 18-hole cut. This was the first of two U.S. Amateur qualifiers in Georgia. The second will be at Reynolds Plantation-Great Waters in Eatonton, July 21-22.
Qualifiers advance to the 114th annual U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga., August 11-17. Entries were open to any amateur golfer with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4. The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA.
