Frank Remmes Wins Georgia Senior Match Play Championship
Don Marsh claims Super Senior title

Statesboro, Ga. --- Frank Remmes of Lilburn captured his first Georgia Senior Match Play Championship with a victory over Chris Hall of Mableton, 2 and 1. Don Marsh of Johns Creek won the Super Senior division with a 1 up victory over Frank Costanzo of Savannah. The fourth playing of this competition was held at Forest Heights Country Club, May 5-8.


Remmes made his way through the bracket with victories over Randy Bowman of Summerville, 5 and 4, in the round of 16, then Tommy Beman of Alpharetta, 4 and 2, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Remmes beat Larry Vaughan of Greensboro, 1 up, to book his match with Hall in the finals.


Hall made his way back to the final match as the four-seed after posting a 2-over-par 146 (71-75) in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying round. He defeated William Lavender of St. Simons Island, 2 and 1, in the round of 16. Hall then needed extra holes to beat Donny Phillips, Jr., of Suwanee, 19 holes, in the quarterfinals. In Friday morning's first semifinal match, Hall topped Jack Hall of Savannah, 4 and 2.


In the Super Senior division, top seed Don Marsh defeated Frank Costanzo of Savannah for the title. Marsh made it to the final with wins over Bruce Wood of Suwanee, 19 holes, in the quarterfinals, and Dick Van Leuvan of Atlanta, 2 up, in the semifinals. Costanzo earned victories over Les Buell of Marietta, 4 and 2, in the quarters, and Howard Tomlinson of Guyton, 2 and 1, in the semis.


Entries were open to male amateur golfers. The Senior division was open to those age 55 and older as of May 5, and the Super Senior division was open to those age 65 and older as of May 5. The format is match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying. The low 16 players advanced to match play in the Senior division and the low eight players in the Super Senior division.
