Georgia Falls, 11 1/2 to 12 1/2, at GA-SC Girls' Junior Challenge Match

 

AIKEN, S.C. - Georgia falls to South Carolina, 11 1/2 to 12 1/2, at the Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match. The 10th playing of this competition took place at Palmetto Golf Club, July 25-26.


The first match of day two resulted in a point and a half being awarded to each team, as Georgia's Alissa Yang of Norcross split with South Carolina's Victoria Huskey of Greenville. Match two also gave a point and a half to each squad with Melanie Talbott of Woodstock splitting with Baylee Evans of Lancaster, S.C.


Payton Schanen of Milton, the 2014 Georgia Girls' champion, swept all three points in her match with the Palmetto State's Gracyn Burgess of Lexington. The reigning Georgia Girls' champion, Lauren Lightfritz of Suwanee, earned a half point for Georgia in her match with Ashley Czarnecki of Greenville, S.C.


The opening day of the GA-SC Girls' Junior Challenge Match saw Georgia earn five points to South Carolina's seven. Talbott earned a half point for Georgia in her match with Huskey of Greenville, who earned 2 1/2 points for South Carolina. Yang notched another half point for the Peach State against Evans of Lancaster, who scored 2 1/2 points for her team.


Lightfritz earned 1 1/2 points for the away team, while Burgess of Lexington earned the same for the home team. In the final match of the day Schanen picked up 2 1/2 points over her opponent, Czarnecki of Greenville, who scored a half point for South Carolina.


Over the two-day competition between the bordering states, Schanen recorded a total of 10 1/2 points for Georgia.


The format of this competition each day was singles match play, all scored in Nassau format, with one point awarded to the winner of each nine and one point awarded for the overall match winner.
