Jorge Cora of Atlanta, Ga., earned medalist honors and a spot in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship after posting a 3-under-par 69 at an 18-hole qualifier at Berkeley Hills Country Club. Cora is joined by fellow Georgians Mark Burden of Atlanta (71), Bill Leonard of Dallas (71) and Jeff Belk of Marietta (72). Matthew Grandy of Greenville, S.C., also qualified (71).
Three Georgians finished at even-par 72, including Belk, Gary Unell of Sandy Springs and Philip Beatty of Roswell. After a three-hole playoff to determine the final qualifying spot and alternate positions, Belk earned the fifth and final spot. Beatty finished as first alternate, while Unell finished as second.
The 61st U.S. Senior Amateur Championship will be held at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., September 26-October 1. Entries were open to male amateur golfers who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 7.4. The U.S. Senior Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
