Georgia, South Carolina end in tie, 8-8, at Junior Challenge Match

 

MACON, Ga. - After a day of exciting matches, the Peach State and Palmetto State finish in a tie as the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match ends 8-8. The 41st annual competition took place at Idle Hour Club, July 22-23.

In the eight matches on day two at Idle Hour Club, Georgia earned the win in five of them. Davis Brainard of Dunwoody beat Harry Reynolds of Greenville, S.C., 2 and 1. Grant Sutliff of Suwanee defeated Nathan Franks of Roebuck, S.C., 2 and 1, giving him a clean sweep (2-0) in his two matches. Logan Perkins of Locust Grove earned Georgia's third point on the day (and his second of the competition) with his win over Drayton Stewart of Charleston, S.C., 2 up.

Match six went Georgia's way as well with Jordan Baker of Cumming topping James May of Ninety Six, S.C., 1 up. The Peach State's final point was a crucial one as the reigning Georgia Junior Champion, Justin Kim of Rome, birdied the 18th hole and earned a 2 up victory over Colby Patton of Fountain Inn, S.C., 2 up. Kim's win in the final match tied up the Challenge Match.

Matches which finished in South Carolina's favor included Ryan Hines of Woodstock falling to Seth Taylor of Gaffney, 6 and 5; Will Kahlstorf of Watkinsville falling to Jacob Bridgeman of Inman, 4 and 3; and Alex Ross of Atlanta falling to Tyler Gray of Lugoff, 2 up.

On day one, Georgia won a pair of matches and two others finished all square for their three points. Sutliff beat Reynolds, 4 and 3. Georgia's second point came when Perkins defeated Taylor, 1 up. Baker and Bridgeman split their match, as did Will Kahlstorf of Watkinsville and May.
