Notes
Luke Schniederjans of Powder Springs posted a 6-under-par 134 (65-69) over a 36-hole qualifier to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Joining the medalist as the four qualifiers include three other Georgians at even-par 140 - Chandler Eaton of Alpharetta (73-67), Jackson Bishop of Gainesville (70-70) and S.M. Lee of Buford (68-72).
Three players were tied at 1-over-par 141, so a playoff was needed to determine the first and second alternate spots. Those players were Jake Fendt of Suwanee (73-68), Charles Huntzinger of Duluth (72-69) and Thomas Todd III of Laurens, S.C., (67-74). Fendt was not present at the start of the playoff, so Huntzinger and Todd began extra holes. On the 485-yard, par 4 18th hole, Todd made par to finish as first alternate, while Huntzinger finished as second.
During Tuesday's round one, severe weather entered the area and the horns blew at 6:21 p.m., signaling the stoppage of play. After a two hour and 10 minute delay, play resumed. Inclement weather returned and the horns blew again and play was called for the day at 8:41 p.m. Five players finished round one at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Sixty-four players made the 18-hole cut at 7-over-par 77 and better.
This was the first of two 36-hole qualifiers held in Georgia. The second will take place at Newnan Country Club, July 25-26. The 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., August 15-21.
