COLUMBUS, Ga. ---  Wright Waddell of Columbus, playing at his home club, defeats Mark Nickerson of Roswell, 3 and 2, to win the Georgia Senior Match Play Championship. The sixth edition of this event took place at the beautiful Green Island Country Club, April 11-14.

Waddell made his way to the finals with wins over Mark Benefield of Peachtree Corners (6 and 5) in the round of 16, and Frank Remmes of Lilburn (2 and 1) in the quarterfinals, and Alan Thielemann of Woodstock (4 and 2) in the semifinals. Waddell was the low medalist after stroke play qualifying and earned the number one seed. 

Nickerson made his way through the bracket with victories over Allen Peake of Macon (1 up) in the round of 16, and Donny Phillips Jr. of Suwanee (3 and 2) in the quarterfinals, and Jack Kearney of Peachtree City (4 and 2) in the semifinals. Nickerson earned the number ten seed after stroke play qualifying. 

With the victory, Waddell earns an exemption into the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be played at Cartersville Country Club, May 19-21.

David Nell of Sharpsburg won the title in the Super Senior division. He defeated Bill Evans of Columbus (2 and 1) in the final match. Nell advanced to the finals with big wins over Kenneth Coolik of Columbus (3 and 2) in the round of 16, and Brian Johnston of Peachtree Corners (3 and 2). In the semifinals Nell defeated Ernie Venet of Moultrie (1 up). Nell earned the number three seed in the bracket after stroke play qualifying. 

To advance to the finals, Evans had wins over Mitsuji Ogawa of Columbus (2 and 1) in the round of 16, and Dan Rhoads of Flowery Branch (2 and 1) in the quarterfinals. Evans defeated Joe Whisenant of Roopville (4 and 3) in the semifinals. Evans earned the number twelve seed after stroke play qualifying. 

Entries were open to male amateur golfers. The Senior division was open to those age 55 and older as of April 11, and the Super Senior division was open to those age 65 and older as of April 11.
