Georgia Defeats Florida at Annual Women's Team Matches
ROCKY FACE, GA - The Georgia team earned 26 of the 36 possible points, to clinch the third victory for Georgia in three years at the Georgia-Florida Women's team Matches held August 16-17, at The Farm in Rocky Face.
Friday's round consisted of 12 singles matches played in a Nassau format, which awards one point to the winner of each of the nines as well as one point for the overall match. Thursday's round, which Georgia led 10 1/2 - 7 1/2 featured two-person teams playing six four-ball matches using the same scoring format.
Winning matches Friday for Georgia were Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta (2 ½), Kathi Eutzler of Atlanta (3-0), Shannon Silvernail of Macon (3-0), Karen Whidby of Valdosta (3-0), Courtney Swaim of Sugar Hill (2 ½-1/2), Laura Coble of Augusta (3-0), Allison Hiller of Atlanta (3-0), Patti McMillan of Cumming (2 ½-1/2), and halving her match was Darlene Werhnyak of Lawrenceville (1 ½-1 ½). The Georgia team was co-captained by Linda Meltz of Dunwoody and Sissi Gann of Kathleen.
This was the 21st playing of the Georgia-Florida Women's Team Matches, which brought together the top women golfers in the two neighboring states. The team members were selected based on their performance in recent state association events. Georgia won last year's competition at Disney's Eagle Pines Golf Course in Orlando, Fla., 33 1/2 - 20 1/2. This was Georgia's third win in three years, but Florida still holds the series lead 11-10.
