The Yates Family

Brothers Charlie and P. Dan Yates, and Dan's son Danny Yates, have excelled as competitors in golf for 80 years in Georgia, across the U.S., and internationally. The Yates family is unique in Georgia in having three family members win Georgia State Amateur Championships (Charlie in 1931 and 1932, P. Dan in 1939, and Danny in 1977, 1989 & 1996). All three have served the game of golf in a variety of capacities, including captaining the Walker Cup Team, serving as directors of the GSGA, and being national committeemen of the USGA. The Yates Scholarship honors the family's support for and service to the game of golf.

 

Charlie Yates
Charlie Yates was born in Atlanta, Ga., on September 9, 1913. Charlie won the Georgia State Amateur in 1931 and 1932. In 1934, he won the NCAA individual title while playing for Georgia Tech. In 1937 he won the Western Amateur. He became an international name in golf in 1938 when he won the coveted British Amateur. In 1936 and 1938, he played on the U.S. Walker Cup Team. In 1953, he was captain of the Walker Cup Team, and was named honorary captain in 1985. Five times in his competitive career, Mr. Yates, secretary of the Augusta National Golf Club, was the low scoring amateur in the Masters Tournament. In 1980, Mr. Yates was presented with the Bob Jones Award by the United States Golf Association. 

P. Dan Yates, Jr.
P. Dan Yates, Jr., father of Danny Yates, is a native of Atlanta, and was born in 1918. He grew up across from the golf course at the Atlanta Athletic Club at East Lake, tagging along with his older brother, Charlie, and with Bobby Jones. From 1938 to 1941, Dan was a member of the Georgia Tech golf team, serving as captain for three years. Some of his amateur golf victories include: the 1939 Georgia State Amateur, the Dogwood Invitational, the Atlanta City Championship, and the Durham, NC Invitational. In 1946, he was runner-up in the Georgia State Amateur, and in 1941 and 1946, he was runner-up in the Southern Golf Association Four-Ball. He served as a director of the Georgia State Golf Association, and is currently a director of the Georgia State Golf Association Foundation.

P. Dan Yates, III
P. Dan "Danny" Yates, son of P. Dan Yates, Jr., and nephew of Charlie Yates, was born in Atlanta, Ga., on May 3, 1950. He won the 1970 Spirit of America and played on the 1971 and 1972 Georgia SEC Championship teams. In 1971, Yates made the cut at the U.S. Open. He has won the Southern Amateur, the 1992 U.S. Mid-Amateur, and has won the Georgia State Amateur three times (1977, 1989 & 1996), and the Georgia State Mid-Amateur three times. He was runner-up in the 1974 North-South Tournament and was runner-up in the 1988 U.S. Amateur. He was a member of the 1988 U.S. World Amateur Team, the 1989 and 1993 Walker Cup teams, and captained the 1999 and 2001 Walker Cup teams. Because of his amateur accomplishments, he played in the 1989 and 1993 Masters Tournaments. Mr. Yates served as director of the GSGA for seven years, as director of the Atlanta Junior Golf Association for 10 years, as director of the USGA Junior Golf Committee for 12 years, and currently serves on the USGA Green Section.
